No, we're not talking about getting camera and lighting equipment donated, or getting a bunch of short ends, or even guerrilla filmmaking techniques. We're talking about the DGA's Low Budget Agreement (LBA), which enables directors to make low-budget films that are safeguarded by the Guild's creative rights protections and receive residuals payments.

The LBA offers a very flexible strategy, regardless of the budget of your film.

The DGA's current LBA covers films made for up to $6 million. The agreement is structured in four tiers: films produced for less than $1.2 million; films with budgets greater than $1.2 million and less than $2.5 million; films made for more than $2.5 million but less than $3.5 million; and films produced for more than $3.5 million but less than $6 million.

In addition, directors get access to some of the best people in the business to help them achieve their vision. Guild ADs and UPMs bring much needed experience to beginning filmmakers, helping them stay on schedule and on budget.

TIPS - Charles Burnett: I wish I had taken more classes in psychology. In order to deal with this business, you have to constantly reinvent yourself. As a director, you're under the microscope — your work and your process is being evaluated every step of the way.
