Stephen Frears was in an impish mood following the screening of his new prize-winning film Dirty Pretty Things at a July 16 DGA sponsored event held in the Florence Gould Auditorium of the Alliance Française/French Institute in New York City.

In typical "get-on-with-it, it's-only-a-movie" British style, Frears downplayed any serious analysis of his directorial methods to the discussion's moderator, director Glenn Gordon Caron. Instead, he threw bouquets to his collaborators – the actors, cinematographer Chris Menges and writer Steve Knight.

The clouds that drifted over Franco-American geopolitical relations were certainly on the minds of the City of Lights/City of Angels organizers as they kicked off the festival's seventh year [April 8-12]. But they could not dampen the enthusiasm audiences gave to the slate of eleven French features, each one preceded by a French short. Ranging from a solemn examination of two brothers facing death to a Parisian butcher hiding Jewish orphans in WWII, this year's line-up was as diverse as any in the festival's history. City of Lights/City of Angels partners – DGA, L'ARP, MPA, SACEM, UNIFRANCE, WGA, and the Consulat General de France of Los Angeles – hosted the opening night reception, which was followed by the screening of Laurent Bouhnik's 24 Hours in the Life of a Woman.
